Little Mathletics Quarterly Update: So, What’s Been Going On?

Well! Time for the quarterly update, as it seems to happen here. I’m currently slaving away over a gigantic change to the Complete Portfolio, for one. It’s a little weird going through everything I’ve done over the past three or so months. There’s been some pretty interesting stuff in that time, though, so I’ll try and point out the most intriguing bits in the Portfolio Highlights section.
The biggest news is the Game Developer Salary Report: 2004-2007, which I spent the past few weeks writing up. It’s been a pretty tough run, and I’ve seen the sun come up a few too many times for comfort, but it’s all together now and I’m pretty goddamned proud of it. You could buy a copy, if that’s your thing; it’s available for the bargain price of US$2,995.
Assuming that’s not quite within your price range—and it’s probably not, since it’s mostly aimed at HR, business and Government types—you can get an idea of what the Report entails through this typically boorish Kotaku post, this Joystiq post, this GameIndustry.biz report featuring a few exclusive European factoids, and the expected Gamasutra and GameSetWatch posts on the matter.
But if you’re after the real dish, you can read this interview with me at GameDaily, courtesy of James Brightman. There’s super interesting things like:
“There seems to be a relative drop in salaries in the East of the U.S. that’s an apparent trend—it’s one that’s not representative of all sectors, but when you see a state like New York not appearing in the top ten states by average salary any more, it’s something that certainly comes as a bit of a surprise.”
…and…
“It does map well to the cost of living, but it’s also an extremely populous area for developers, which means there’s a very healthy level of competition for the top developers who already live in those areas.”
You can’t get that kind of awesome candid insight anywhere else, trust me. I should point out that there was, admittedly, a leeetle bit of editorial input from Simon Carless, who made sure too much wasn’t given away, and also rewrote the odd piece here and there, so it ’s kind of some weird amalgam of the two of us in that sense. He noted that I probably should not point out the odd anomaly in the Report’s data, no matter how funny I found jokes about Denmark to be, but it’s still solid gold, eh?
